2025 has not been an easy year for me. In the smallest explanation, my dad and I are facing extreme poverty due to him losing his job due to cancer. While we are working towards government aid, there is only so much we can do in the mean time until his disability payments begin.
In May, my dad was diagnosed with small-cell lung cancer, which is an inoperable and usually incurable cancer. He has already undergone an entire round of chemotherapy and radiation, and we are looking towards prophylactic brain radiation in the hopes of catching it before it spreads to his brain. He is also currently on immunotherapy treatments and receiving blood transfusions.
As you might imagine with all of that, our schedule has been exhaustingly busy. We have had a doctor's appointment almost every single day, Monday through Friday, since June. Because of this, along with his health, my prior health issues, and my taking on a caretaker role for him, we haven't been able to work at all since May.
He took our his 401k from work when he stopped working, but we have already used it all in paying for bills and medical expenses. We have gotten him on new insurance that thankfully covers everything with no payments now. He is also now on disability, although his payments will not start until the new year. We have been given SNAP benefits as well, but with the government shutdown, that hasn't been exactly a smooth transition for us.
